National Unity Day: Remembering Sardar Patel- The Architect of a United India
23 Jan 2024

India, a marvel of modern times, emerged as an independent nation on 15th August 1947, breaking free from centuries of foreign rule. However, this newfound freedom was shadowed by the dismemberment of mother India, with the threat of further partition looming.

The India we cherish today, often taken for granted, could have been a patchwork of disjointed states, with the wounds of partitions forever haunting its progress, if not for unparalleled contributions of Sardar Patel.

Sardar Patel, popularly known as “Iron Man of India” was known for his indomitable courage, masterful diplomacy, sharp intellect, and wisdom of one man, that ensured the unification of India. His remarkable efforts paved the way for us to live in a united India, as we collectively stride toward our rightful destiny among the community of nations.

In recognition of Sardar Patel's significant role and contributions to India's political unification, the Indian government designated the 31st of October, his birth anniversary, as National Unity Day in 2014.

National Unity: The Lasting Legacy of Sardar Patel

In a historical achievement, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel masterfully united 565 Princely States, setting an unparalleled precedent for national integration. His vision for a united India remained unwavering, shaping the nation's path for years to come.

The more intractable issues of integration of States of Hyderabad and Junagadh were the pinnacles of his uniting efforts. He used a combination of diplomatic efforts and military action to achieve the integration of Hyderabad. While he used a combination of diplomatic negotiations, blockage, and popular sentiment to achieve the integration of Junagadh.

Thereafter, the journey towards unity persisted with landmark events in post-independent India with integration of various other territories like French transfer of Pondicherry and its territories to India followed by liberation of Goa from Portuguese control through Operation Vijay, making it a centrally administered Union Territory.

Sardar Patel's unifying legacy  is symbolized by the 'Statue of Unity' a 182-meter statue, world’s tallest, on the banks of Narmada River in Kevadia, Gujarat. It stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to national unity and the cohesive India we cherish today.

Sardar Patel's legacy extends far beyond the political realm, encompassing his invaluable teachings that continue to guide India in the present day.

Forging the Modern Steel Framework: Lessons in Administration and Ethics

Before independence, Indian Civil Services was regarded as an  instrument of exploitation and oppression, to be used by their colonial masters for the benefit of the British Crown.

However, today, it is held in the highest of regards for the dedication and service of the national cause. Often referred to as the "Steel Framework" of the nation, it is now at the forefront of national rejuvenation and development.

This transformation is owed in no small part to the imprint of Sardar Patel after India’s independence.

His ability to build and lead teams, his emphasis on listening, and his commitment to action provide a blueprint for effective leadership in contemporary administration.
  • Real Meaning of 'Freedom': Sardar Patel's perspective on freedom as 'happiness for all' continues to inspire. In the 21st century, the concept of freedom aligns with the idea of inclusive development, where everyone can participate and benefit from the progress of society.
  • Foresighted Economist: Sardar Patel's economic ideas, such as encouraging private investment, reducing restrictions on production and trade, and import substitution for self-reliance, remain relevant.
