Inauguration of Indian Consulate in Marseille

India and France is set to jointly inaugurate an Indian consulate in Marseille, France. This will be India's second diplomatic mission in France, showcasing the strengthening of bilateral ties during PM's visit for the Artificial Intelligence Summit.

Strategic Importance of Marseille

  • Marseille, located on the Mediterranean coast, is a strategic entry point for the India Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEEC) for Europe.
  • The city houses the Port of Marseille-Fos, France's largest port and a major hub for imports and exports between Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
  • The port's oil terminal at Fos-sur-Mer is crucial for importing oil to France and neighboring countries.

Consulate's Role and Services

  • The consulate will serve the growing Indian diaspora in southern France, including regions like Marseille, Toulouse, and Rhône-Alpes.
  • It aims to provide consular services, reducing the necessity for travel to Paris for such services.

Historical Significance

  • PM is also set to visit Mazargues Cemetery to honor nearly 900 Indian soldiers commemorated there for their role in World War I.
  • Marseille was a base for Indian troops during World War I, and an Indian Memorial was unveiled in July 1925 by Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood.
