The latest Time Use Survey (TUS) conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) provides insights into the allocation of time in daily activities across India.
Learning Activities
- People in rural areas spent more time on "learning activities" in 2024 compared to urban areas.
- The time spent on learning activities includes formal education, extracurricular activities, homework, and travel related to learning.
- Overall, there was a decline in time spent on learning activities in both urban and rural areas from 2019 to 2024.
- Urban residents spent 87 minutes daily on learning in 2024, down from 95 minutes in 2019.
- Rural residents spent 90 minutes, slightly down from 92 minutes in 2019.
Gender Analysis in Learning
- Females have closed the gap with men in time spent on learning activities over the last five years.
- Women's time remained unchanged at 84 minutes, while men's time decreased from 102 to 94 minutes.
Survey Methodology
- Information was collected from individuals aged 6 years and above, with activities recorded in 30-minute intervals over a 24-hour reference period.
- A maximum of three activities performed for at least 10 minutes within a time slot were recorded.
- The collected data was classified into nine major divisions.
Employment and Related Activities
- Time spent on employment-related activities increased in both urban and rural areas.
- Urban residents spent 199 minutes in 2024, up from 188 minutes in 2019.
- Rural residents spent 171 minutes in 2024, up from 153 minutes in 2019.
