Victory in Europe (VE) Day and India's Unsung Heroes

Eighty years ago, on May 8, 1945, the Second World War ended in Europe with the surrender of Nazi Germany, celebrated as Victory in Europe (VE) Day. While this day is significant globally, it often goes unnoticed in India, where the period is mainly remembered for the struggle for independence. This narrative revisits the contributions of two lesser-known Indian figures who played vital roles during the war.

Kolachala Sitaramaiah

  • Born in a poor family in Uyyuru, Andhra Pradesh in 1899.
  • Moved to the United States; obtained Masters’ degrees in Chemistry from Chicago and Yale Universities.
  • Emigrated to the USSR in the 1930s for petrochemical research.
  • During the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, contributed to the development of kerosene-based fuels and lubricants for Soviet tanks.
  • His efforts were instrumental in the Soviet victory at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, a crucial turning point in the war.
  • Awarded Soviet honors; later researched plasma, contributing to nuclear fusion advancements.

Air Chief Marshal Idris Hasan Latif

  • From a privileged background in Hyderabad; joined the Royal Indian Air Force in 1941.
  • Initially flew outdated biplanes on the North West Frontier; later participated in the Battle of Britain and the D-Day counter-offensive.
  • Fought in Burma, flying the Hawker Hurricane against the Japanese army and Luftwaffe.
  • Post-war, chose to stay in India during Partition; became the 10th Chief of the Indian Air Force in 1978.
  • Contributed to strengthening India-France defense ties, remembered during his ambassadorial stint in France (1985-88).

Legacy and Reflection

Victory in Europe Day is a reminder of global sacrifices, including from India, towards achieving a free world. It acknowledges the valor of individuals like Idris Latif and Kolachala Sitaramaiah, who contributed significantly without seeking recognition. Their stories remind us that anyone, regardless of background, can influence history.
