Impact of Technology and AI on Indian Accountants

The rapid advancement of technology and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is causing challenges for Indian accountants, as highlighted by a survey conducted by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Survey Findings

  • More than half of the Indian accountants surveyed expressed concerns about their ability to develop necessary future skills due to rapidly changing technology.
  • This concern is particularly pronounced among junior and mid-level professionals, more so than senior leadership.
  • 54% of Indian respondents are worried about not developing future-ready skills, which is higher than the global average of 50%.
  • 43% of Indian professionals view AI as the most valuable skill, compared to 36% globally.
  • Only 37% of respondents reported that their organization provides AI-related learning opportunities.

Workplace Models and Preferences

  • The survey showed that 45% of Indian respondents are working in a hybrid model, and 41% are fully office-based.
  • Despite being office-based, only 13% prefer this model, with 75% favoring hybrid working.
  • The percentage of fully office-based professionals has increased over the years, from 30% in 2023 to 41% in 2025.
  • Flexible work arrangements are prioritized by 49% of respondents as a key benefit for work-life balance.

Concerns with Remote Work

While flexible work is valued, the survey references a report by the US Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, indicating that remote work can negatively affect the quality of training, progression opportunities, and consistent work culture, which might indirectly impact audit quality.

Survey Demographics

The survey was extensive, involving over 10,000 participants from 175 countries, examining topics such as career ambitions, hybrid working, inclusivity practices, upskilling, mental health, and employability issues.
