Introduction of e-Zero FIR Initiative
The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has launched a pilot initiative called the e-Zero FIR to combat financial cybercrimes. This initiative is designed to streamline the process of converting cybercrime complaints into First Information Reports (FIRs).
Key Features of the e-Zero FIR Initiative
- Automatically converts complaints with a fraud value above ₹10 lakh registered on the 1930 helpline or cybercrime.gov.in into FIRs.
- The pilot was launched in Delhi, with plans for nationwide implementation, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Implementation and Process
The initiative addresses challenges faced by victims in recovering lost money due to cybercrimes. It involves:
- Integration of I4C’s National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), Delhi Police’s e-FIR system, and the National Crime Record Bureau’s Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems.
- Complaints exceeding ₹10 lakh will automatically result in a Zero FIR with the e-Crime Police Station of Delhi, which will then route them to territorial Cybercrime Police Stations.
- Complainants must visit the cybercrime Police Station within 3 days to convert a Zero FIR to a regular FIR.
Legal Framework and Benefits
The process aligns with sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Key benefits include:
- Enhanced conversion rate of complaints into FIRs.
- Facilitated recovery of lost funds for victims.
- Enabled punitive action against cybercriminals.
