2 min read

Launch of the Bharat Forecast System

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has introduced an indigenously-developed, precise weather forecasting model named the Bharat Forecast System. This system marks a significant advancement in climatic predictions, capable of operating within a 6-kilometre grid.

Key Improvements

  • This new model offers a 64% improvement in prediction skills, enhancing accuracy at the village and panchayat levels.
  • For extreme rainfall events, the model shows a 30% improvement in accuracy compared to existing systems.
  • There is a notable advancement in the prediction of cyclone paths.

Background and Development

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune developed the Bharat Forecast System. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) will use it for both short-range and long-range forecasts over smaller areas.

Technological Enhancements

  • Previously, IMD's models operated over a 23-kilometre grid, improved to 12 kilometres, and are now further refined to a 6-kilometre grid.
  • Advancements are supported by high-end computer systems and satellite imagery, reducing prediction time from 12-14 hours to 4-6 hours.

Integration and National Impact

The new system, handed over by the Minister for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, signals India as the sole country operating a global forecast system at such high resolution in real time. The Bharat Forecast model, implemented in 2022, has undergone three years of testing and is now ready for operational use.

Overall Significance

This development aligns with the central government’s ‘Mission Mausam’, aiming to make weather predictions more accessible and beneficial for the public, enhancing India’s capabilities in meteorological science.
