NITI Aayog's Roadmap for Clean Energy by 2070

In response to India's increasing energy demand and its aspiration to become a developed nation, NITI Aayog is formulating a roadmap extending to 2070. The focus is on reducing emissions and enhancing clean energy penetration across key sectors like mobility, agriculture, industry, cooking, and power.

Energy Model Redesign

  •  NITI Aayog is revamping the India Energy Security Scenarios (IESS) model to extend its analysis from the original target of 2047 to 2070.
    1. The model assesses the impact of green-energy policies and aims to balance supply and demand.
    2. It includes sectors such as power, renewable energy, bioenergy, and demand sectors like industry and cooking.

Macroeconomic Trajectories and Goals

  •  The methodology uses broad economic trajectories to set targets for achieving a GDP of $30 trillion by 2047.
  •  Population stabilization is projected at approximately 1.65 billion by 2047.

Net-Zero Exercise and Resource Demands

  •  The model helps identify data trajectories for net-zero emissions, addressing the distinct demands of sectors like industry, steel, and aluminum.
  •  Various energy sources, including thermal and nuclear power, are being considered to meet these demands, particularly for transportation fuel needs.

Cost and Investment Insights

  •  The planning process examines the integration of clean energy, considering costs and the necessary investment for sustainability.
  •  Challenges such as the slow shift of cargo transport from roads to rail are noted.

Interactive and Detailed Modelling

  •  The revamped model will allow users to create their own net-zero pathways, focusing on realistic sector contributions, especially in mobility and agriculture.

Governance and Implementation

  •  Nine working groups, comprising OEMs, academic institutions, and industry associations, are discussing the outcomes and pathways to net-zero.
  •  The updated pathway and model are expected to be released shortly, with phased policy implementation subject to top authority decisions.
