Refugee Crisis in Mizoram
Background and Current Situation
A conflict between ethnic armed groups in Myanmar has led to approximately 4,000 Chin people seeking refuge in Mizoram, India.
- The influx began after July 3, 2025, following armed conflict near the India-Myanmar border.
Ethnic and Geographical Context
The Chins of Myanmar share ethnic ties with Mizoram's dominant Mizo population, as well as other groups such as Kukis, Zomis, and Kuki-Chins from Bangladesh.
- The Tiau River marks part of the 510 km India-Myanmar border, and the river's crossing has been a key point for refugee movement.
Broader Refugee Situation
Mizoram hosts more than 30,000 refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, including:
- 2,000 Kuki-Chin refugees from Bangladesh.
- Over 5,000 Kuki-Zo people displaced by ethnic violence in Manipur, sheltered since 2023.
