University Grants Commission's Draft LOCF

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a draft of the Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) for several disciplines including anthropology, chemistry, commerce, economics, geography, home science, mathematics, physical education, and political science.

Focus on Indian Knowledge Systems

  • The LOCF emphasizes the incorporation of Indian Knowledge Systems into each subject.
  • Opposition-ruled States have raised concerns about potential 'saffronisation'.

Curriculum Details and Examples

  • Chemistry: Salutation to Saraswati included; traditional Indian fermented beverages are discussed.
  • Commerce: Inclusion of Kautilya’s Arthashastra; concepts like 'Ram Rajya' linked to corporate social responsibility.
  • Mathematics: Mandala geometry, yantras, and temple architecture are introduced to explore foundational Indian mathematical contributions.
  • Anthropology: Integration of insights from thinkers like Charaka and Sushruta aligns with NEP’s goal of decolonizing education.

Curriculum Structure and Credit Allocation

  • Priority is given to single-major pathways with most credits assigned to discipline-specific courses.
  • Example: BSc Chemistry (honours) proposes 172 credits, with 96 core and 32 elective credits in the discipline.

Inclusion of Bhartiya Philosophy

  • Commerce education is encouraged to incorporate a holistic learning approach derived from Bhartiya philosophy.
  • Focuses on promoting ethical decision-making and responsible leadership.

Integration with National Education Policy (NEP)

  • Though NEP advocates for multidisciplinary courses, the LOCF emphasizes discipline-specific learning.
  • Anthropology curriculum aligns with NEP’s emphasis on promoting Indian knowledge systems.
