Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Mission
The Union government is finalizing the roadmap and financial outlay for the CCUS Mission, a pivotal part of India's energy transition strategy. This was highlighted by Rajnath Ram, Adviser for Energy, Natural Resources & Environment at NITI Aayog, during the 3rd Energy Summit of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.
Importance of Energy Security
- Both energy security and long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contracts are crucial.
- CCUS is essential for India to meet its net zero targets.
Natural Gas Consumption Goals
India aims to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030.
- Current natural gas consumption needs to increase by two to three times.
- Projected consumption is approximately 180–200 billion cubic metres.
Key Priorities to Achieve Goals
- Secure an assured long-term supply of natural gas.
- Ensure the affordability of natural gas.
- Expand domestic production through compressed biogas (CBG).
- Conduct comprehensive surveys of India's geological basins to minimize import dependence.
