Overview of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-2025 Draft

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has developed a draft for the National Industrial Classification (NIC)-2025, updating the former NIC-2008 to account for structural and technical changes in the economy, including the emergence of new industries and services.

Key Changes and Details

  • The number of sub-classes in the draft has increased to around 1,900 from 1,303 in NIC-2008.
  • This increase in sub-classes is attributed to greater detail in sectors such as:
    • Health
    • Finance
    • Agriculture
    • Information and Telecommunication
  • The NIC is crucial for:
    • Statistical surveys
    • Censuses
    • Economic research
    • Registration processes
    • Policy formulation by both central and state governments as well as the private sector
  • The draft was developed with input from an expert committee, in consultation with central ministries, departments, and industry experts.

Feedback and Consultation

The ministry is seeking feedback from all stakeholders on this revision to ensure comprehensive representation and accuracy in the classification system.
