Development of Designer Clownfish by NBFGR
Scientists at the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) have successfully developed designer clownfish through cross-breeding.
Research and Publication
- Cross-breeding involved the species:
- Amphiprion percula (male)
- Amphiprion ocellaris (female)
- Research findings were published by scientists Ajith Kumar T.T. and P. R Divya in the journal Current Science.
Hatchery Production Technology
- NBFGR has technology for hatchery production of over a dozen clownfish species using low saline water.
- The designer clownfish were produced at the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre, Airoli, Mumbai.
Community Aquaculture Initiative
- NBFGR collaborated with the Tribal Development department of the Tamil Nadu government for livelihood promotion.
- Regions involved:
- Pichavaram
- Pulicat
- Designer clownfish will be propagated at Annamalai University and supplied to beneficiaries for rearing using a cluster mode approach.
- This initiative aims to provide a promising economic return to the tribal community.
