Underwater Archaeological Explorations off Poompuhar Coast

The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA), in collaboration with the Indian Maritime University, has launched underwater archaeological explorations off the coast of Poompuhar, also known as Kaveripoompattinam, an ancient port city in the Mayiladuthurai district.

Background

  • The last underwater survey in the Poompuhar area was conducted in the 1990s.
  • This initiative follows the Tamil Nadu Budget for 2025-26, where Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced plans for deep-sea excavations.
  • The focus is on the area between Poompuhar, the early Chola capital, and Nagapattinam, a medieval trade hub linked to Southeast Asia.

Exploration Details

  • The current explorations are led by K. Rajan, an eminent archaeologist, and R. Sivanantham, Joint Director of the TNSDA.
  • A team of divers is mapping and documenting anomalies using advanced equipment.
  • The survey employs side-scan sonar, echo sounders, underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROV), and sub-bottom profilers.
  • Results will be available after data collation and interpretation.

Significance

This initiative aims to explore the antiquity of ancient Tamil civilization, celebrated in Sangam and post-Sangam literature, showcasing the heritage of Tamil Nadu to the world.

Government's Commitment

The DMK government, under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's leadership, emphasizes uncovering Tamil antiquity and highlighting the state's cultural heritage.
