Global Significance of Traditional Medicine

The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that traditional medicine is practiced in 88% of its member states, equivalent to 170 out of 194 countries. It remains a primary health care form, particularly in low- and middle-income nations, due to its accessibility and affordability.

  • Traditional medicine supports biodiversity conservation, nutrition security, and sustainable livelihoods.
  • The global traditional medicine market is projected to reach $583 billion by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 10%-20%.
  • Specific market values include China’s traditional Chinese medicine at $122.4 billion and Australia’s herbal medicine at $3.97 billion.

India's Traditional Medicine Sector

India's AYUSH sector (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) is valued at $43.4 billion and has expanded nearly eight-fold in the past decade.

  • Manufacturing sector revenues increased from ₹21,697 crore in 2014-15 to over ₹1.37 lakh crore.
  • The services sector generated ₹1.67 lakh crore in revenue.
  • India exports AYUSH and herbal products worth $1.54 billion to over 150 countries.
  • Ayurveda has received formal recognition as a medical system in several nations.

AYUSH Sector Development

  • According to the National Sample Survey Office (2022-23), awareness of AYUSH is nearly universal in India, with 95% in rural areas and 96% in urban centers.
  • Over half of the Indian population used AYUSH systems in the past year, with Ayurveda being the preferred choice for rejuvenation and preventive care.

Research and Global Outreach

India has significantly invested in AYUSH research through various institutions, focusing on clinical validation, drug standardization, and integrative care models.

  • India has signed 25 bilateral agreements and 52 institutional partnerships globally.
  • Established 43 AYUSH Information Cells across 39 countries and 15 academic chairs in foreign universities.

Technological Integration and Global Influence

The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in India, supported by the Government of India, aims to harness traditional medicine potential through modern science and digital health technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Ayurveda’s core philosophy offers solutions for lifestyle diseases and climate change, extending beyond human wellness to veterinary care and plant health.

Ayurveda Day 2025 Theme

The theme "Ayurveda for People & Planet" emphasizes a holistic approach toward nurturing all life forms. Ayurveda is positioned as a wellness movement, bridging traditional knowledge with contemporary needs.
