NISAR Earth-Observing Radar Satellite

The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite has captured its first images of Earth's surface as it approaches full operational status.

Key Features and Capabilities

  • Satellite Launch: Launched by ISRO on July 30. 
  • Radar Technology: Uses an L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, capable of resolving objects as small as 15 feet (five meters). 
  • Image Details:
    • Green indicates forests.
    • Magenta represents hard surfaces like bare ground and buildings.
    • Dark areas signify water.

Significant Imagery Captured

  • Mount Desert Island, Maine: Captured on August 21, includes forest areas and the town of Bar Harbor. 
  • Northeastern North Dakota: Captured on August 23, depicts forests, wetlands, and farmland with distinct agricultural patterns.

  • Aids in disaster response, infrastructure monitoring, and agricultural management.
  • Helps monitor changes in land cover, such as forest and wetland ecosystems.
  • Tracks crop progress through growing seasons globally.
