In 2023, India witnessed a significant number of road accidents and fatalities, as reported by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

  • Total road accidents: 4,64,029 (an increase of 17,261 from 2022)
  • Total fatalities: 1,73,826 (1.6% increase from 2022)
  • Total injuries: 4.47 lakh
  • Two-wheeler riders accounted for 46% of victims

Causes of Accidents

  • Over-speeding was the cause of 58.6% of fatalities
  • Dangerous/careless driving or overtaking accounted for 23.6% of fatalities
  • Poor weather, drugs/alcohol, and animal crossing caused 2.8% of the accidents

Time and Location Insights

  • Most accidents occurred between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. (20.7%)
  • Other peak times: 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. (17.3%), 12 noon - 3 p.m. (15%)
  • Highest fatalities on National Highways (34.6%) followed by State Highways (23.4%)

Vehicle and Regional Patterns

  • Majority of two-wheeler deaths: 
    • Tamil Nadu: 11,490 deaths (14.4% of total)
    • Uttar Pradesh: 8,370 deaths (10.5% of total)
  • SUV/car/jeep accidents highest in Uttar Pradesh (19.2% of total such accidents)
  • Truck accidents highest in Uttar Pradesh (29.9% of total truck accidents)

State-Specific Observations

  • In states like Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand, Punjab, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, deaths outnumbered injuries in accidents
  • Expressways reported 3,630 accidents, resulting in 2,372 deaths
