Government Approval under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS)

The government has approved 17 new applications under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), bringing the total to 24 projects.

Details of Approved Projects

  • Three plants for manufacturing camera modules.
  • Nine multilayer printed circuit board (PCB) plants.
  • Two units for optical transceivers.
  • Additional units for components used in mobiles and other electronic items.

The investment in these projects is expected to be ₹7,172 crore, with production valued at ₹65,111 crore. The manufacturing units will be established across nine states/Union Territories, including Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, and Madhya Pradesh.

Involvement of Major Players

  • Homegrown companies such as Aequs Consumer Products, Jabil Circuit India, and Zetwerk’s subsidiaries.
  • Other participants include Uno Minda and Syrma SGS subsidiary Syrma Mobility.

Strategic Focus and Industry Requirements

According to the Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the scheme deliberately focuses on key components critical for the electronics manufacturing ecosystem's long-term growth.

  • Developing domestic design capabilities.
  • Achieving six-sigma quality levels in products.
  • Establishing local suppliers for raw materials.

Companies setting up units may be required to detail their domestic design capabilities to ensure inclusion in their plans.

Noteworthy Projects

  • India's first optical transceiver-manufacturing facility.
  • The first-ever 40-layer PCB manufacturing unit.
  • The first quartz crystal factory.

Future Initiatives

The government will soon introduce a skilling framework for electronics manufacturing to assist companies in engaging with organizations experienced in social fields.

ECMS is a pivotal point for India’s electronics manufacturing, acting as a catalyst to build a competitive ecosystem across components, sub-assemblies, and capital goods.
