Global Value Chain Development Report 2025

The report is a collaborative effort by several organizations, including ADB, the Research Institute for Global Value Chains at the University of International Business and Economics, the Institute of Developing Economies-Japan External Trade Organization, World Economic Forum, and WTO Secretariat.

Key Highlights

  • Emerging Economies:
    • India, the Philippines, and several African economies have improved their stance in business process and digital service exports.
    • These advancements are attributed to both market forces and strategic policy decisions aimed at risk diversification and attracting investments.
  • Services Value-Added:
    • Services now contribute to over one-third of the content in manufacturing exports.
    • This highlights the importance of design, logistics, and digital functions in modern competitiveness.
  • Regional Trade Hubs:
    • Asia, Europe, and North America continue to dominate the majority of Global Value Chain (GVC) trade.
    • Latin America and Africa are identified as emerging nodes, yet they remain on the periphery compared to the main hubs.
  • Globalisation and GVCs:
    • The report supports the notion that globalisation is ongoing and GVCs are crucial.
    • GVC trade share has slightly decreased from 48% in 2022 to 46.3% in the following year.
