Government Crackdown on Illegal Betting and Gambling
The government has intensified efforts against illegal betting and gambling operations, resulting in the ban of 300 websites and mobile applications. This move is part of a broader strategy to regulate the online gaming industry within the country.
Details of the Ban
- The ban covers platforms such as:
- Betting sites
- Peer-to-peer marketplaces
- Live dealer tables
- Roulette and casino apps
- Games involving real money like slots
- Satta/Matka networks, casino gaming apps, and card games that involve real money are included.
Statistics and Legal Framework
- Approximately 8,400 websites have been blocked, with 4,900 of these blocks occurring post the enactment of the Online Gaming Act.
- The Online Gaming Act was passed in August of the previous year and came into effect on October 1, 2025.
- Earlier in January, the government had already blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling websites.
Legislation and Penalties
Under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025:
- All real-money games, whether based on skill or chance, are banned.
- Players are exempt from punishment, but:
- Individuals offering or promoting such games face up to three years in prison and fines up to Rs 1 crore.
- Advertising such platforms may result in up to two years in jail and fines up to Rs 50 lakh.
Regulatory Measures
- A special authority has been established to monitor and enforce the ban, ensuring no real-money games are operational.
- Games that are free-to-play like PUBG and Free Fire are not affected, hence influencers and celebrities can promote them.
