Census 2027 Initiation
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has completed his self-enumeration for the initial phase of Census 2027, known as the Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO).
- This phase focuses on housing conditions, available amenities, and household assets.
- Data collection is being conducted digitally for the first time.
Modi has urged citizens to participate in the Census process through self-enumeration.
Self-Enumeration Process
- Census 2027's first phase began with self-enumeration on April 1.
- It will be followed by a house-to-house houselisting operation starting April 16.
- The first phase is scheduled to complete within a 30-day window between April and September 2026.
Census Coverage
- The Census will cover:
- 784 districts
- 5,127 statutory towns
- 4,580 Census towns
- 6,39,902 villages across 36 states and Union Territories
Administrative Details
- Census is a Union subject, listed at serial number 69 in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India.
- On June 16, the Centre issued a notification to conduct Census 2027.
- The Office of Registrar General of India (RGI) notified the reference date as March 1, 2027, for most parts of the country.
- For snow-bound and non-synchronous areas like Ladakh, parts of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the reference date is October 1, 2026.
