The United States has publicly announced the deployment of active weapons in space, although it has not specified the nature or timing of these deployments. This announcement marks the first public admission by any country regarding space-based weapons.

International Reactions

  • China and Russia, considered by the US as space adversaries, reacted immediately: 
    • China urged the US to halt its expansion of military capabilities in space.
    • Russia emphasized the need to keep space free of weapons, advocating for international efforts towards the demilitarization of space.

Space Weapon Capabilities

The military use of outer space involves various capabilities, including:

  • Launching missiles from Earth to destroy satellites.
  • Sending space-based weapons to destroy ground targets.
  • Non-kinetic methods like disrupting communications or cyber attacks.

Four countries — the US, Russia, China, and India — have demonstrated anti-satellite capabilities.

Legal Ambiguity and International Agreements

While countries advocate for peaceful uses of space, there is no international law banning conventional weapons in space. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 prohibits nuclear and mass destruction weapons, but not conventional weapons or tactics targeting space infrastructure.

  • Proposals for treaties to prevent weapon placement in space, such as the 2008 China-Russia initiative, have not succeeded.
  • The UN's Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space discussions have not resulted in treaties.
  • The Artemis Accords, a voluntary code, promotes peaceful exploration without banning weapon deployments.
