About Mangal Pandey (1827 - 1857)
- Born: Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh.
- He joined 34th Bengal Native Infantry of the British East India Company in 1849 at the age of 22.
Key contributions:
- Key role in the revolt of 1857 also known as the Sepoy mutiny of 1857.
- He protested against the issue of greased cartridges to the soldiers.
- Broke into open mutiny on March 29, 1857, at Barrackpore near Calcutta, which also ignited fire of Revolt of 1857.
- He was court-martialed and hanged at Barrackpore on April 8, 1857.
