Flagellin

A Duke University study suggests a new “sense” in the gut, rooted in the microbiome—a community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea that influence immunity, digestion, and mental health.

  • Mechanism: Special gut cells called neuropods detect flagellin using the TLR5 receptor and send signals to the brain through the vagus nerve (body’s longest autonomic nerve), helping regulate appetite.
  • Implications: Could pave way for new treatments for obesity, depression, and anxiety.
