About NCDs

  • NCDs (chronic diseases) are long-term conditions not directly transmissible between people.
  • Risk Factors: 
    • Behavioural – Tobacco use, unhealthy diets including excess salt, sugar and fats, harmful use of alcohol and insufficient physical activity
    • Metabolic – hypertension, overweight/obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol
    • Environmental – Air pollution, chemical exposure, noise pollution.  
  • Over 80% (over 47 million) of all deaths worldwide are attributed to NCDs and injuries. 
    • Four main NCDs responsible for the majority of these deaths are cardiovascular diseases (heart attacks/stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.
  • Over 80% of premature NCD deaths now occur in low- and middle-income countries.

India’s Initiatives to tackle NCDs 

  • National Program for Prevention and Control of NCDs: Strengthens healthcare infrastructure, trains personnel, ensures early diagnosis, and spreads awareness.
  • Sugar Boards: Mandated by CBSE in all schools to recommended daily sugar intake, display sugar content in commonly consumed foods.
  • Lifestyle Promotion: Campaigns like Eat Right India, Fit India Movement, and Yoga initiatives encourage citizens to adopt healthier routines.
  • Strengthening of Tertiary Cancer Care Centres Facilities Scheme: Financial assistance is provided as a one-time grant of up to ₹120 crore for State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and up to ₹45 crore for Tertiary Cancer Care Centres (TCCCs)
