India's Diplomatic Efforts Post-Pahalgam Terror Attack

Following the Pahalgam terror attack, New Delhi has been engaged in diplomatic measures against Pakistan, focusing on strengthening ties with three of Pakistan’s closest allies: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Saudi Arabia

  • Prime Minister Modi's Visit: During his visit to Jeddah, PM Modi discussed the attack extensively with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. 
  • Joint Statement: Both leaders condemned the attack and rejected any link between terrorism and race, religion, or culture, continuing the dialogue initiated in the 2006 India-KSA Delhi Declaration and 2010 Strategic Partnership. 
  • Past Cooperation: In 2012, Saudi Arabia aided India in arresting Sayed Zabiuddin Ansari, an LeT co-conspirator in the 26/11 attacks, signifying a shift from Saudi Arabia's previous support to extremist groups. 
  • Transformed Relations: The partnership now includes technological cooperation and a promise of $100 billion in Saudi investments. 

The United Arab Emirates (UAE)

  • Strategic Partnership: Strengthened by the 2017 agreement and multiple visits by Modi, marking a significant improvement from the 1990s. 
  • High-Profile Visit: In April, New Delhi hosted Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, enhancing ties with a country historically supportive of Pakistan. 

Taliban Regime in Afghanistan

  • Diplomatic Engagement: The MEA’s representative for Pakistan-Afghanistan-India visited Kabul, meeting Taliban acting foreign minister Muttaqi. 
  • Taliban's Stance: Issued a "categorical condemnation" of the Pahalgam killings, marking a shift from its past actions against Indian interests. 

These diplomatic efforts highlight India's strategic approach to gaining support against terrorism and creating pressure points on Pakistan, showcasing the effectiveness of well-timed diplomacy in reversing past non-cooperative stances.
