Human-Tiger Conflict in Ranthambhore

Recently, Ranthambhore has witnessed three fatal tiger attacks within a small radius, raising concerns over tiger management and human safety in the area.

Recent Incidents

  • Three fatal attacks have occurred in less than three months within a 500-meter radius.
  • The latest victim was a 70-year-old temple chowkidar, attacked by an unidentified tiger.

Previous Attacks

  • April 16: Tigress Kankati killed a 7-year-old boy at the Ganesh temple.
  • May 11: Kankati and her male sibling killed Range Officer Devendra Singh.

Technical Committee's Role and Recommendations

Following the second attack, a technical committee was formed to address the situation.

  • The committee recommended relocating tigress Arrowhead’s three sub-adult cubs, who had become habituated to humans.
  • Kankati was tranquilized and placed in an enclosure, but her siblings were not immediately managed.

Current Actions and Delays

  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the relocation of the tigers.
  • The Environment Ministry's clearance is still pending.

Concerns Over Bureaucratic Delays

  • Experts express frustration over bureaucratic delays in urgent wildlife management actions.
  • The Wildlife Act requires central approval for tiger relocation, causing procedural delays.
