Supreme Court and Electoral Roll Revision in Bihar
The Supreme Court of India announced it will address multiple petitions challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, ordered by the Election Commission of India (ECI), on July 10.
Petitioners’ Concerns
- The petitioners are concerned about the feasibility of the task, citing that eight crore people make up the electorate, with four crore requiring enumeration.
- Objections include the refusal to accept Aadhaar card and voter card as valid documents.
Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR)’s Plea
ADR argued that if the SIR order dated June 24, 2025, is not set aside, it may arbitrarily disenfranchise numerous voters, threatening democratic processes and the constitutional mandate for free and fair elections.
Concerns Over Documentation and Timeline
- The directive demands stringent documentation and allows only a limited timeframe, potentially resulting in the disenfranchisement of genuine voters.
