India-Fiji Relations and Cooperation
On August 25, 2025, Prime Minister of India and Prime Minister of Fiji met in New Delhi to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation in various sectors.
Maritime Security and Defense Cooperation
- India will provide training and equipment to enhance Fiji’s maritime security.
- Both countries support a free, open, inclusive, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
- Collaboration includes U.N. peacekeeping, military medicine, and capacity-building for Fijian forces.
- India announced the gifting of two ambulances to Fiji’s military and the inauguration of a defense wing in the Indian High Commission in Suva.
Cybersecurity and Advanced Technology
The two countries agreed to enhance cooperation in cybersecurity, establishing a cybersecurity training cell in Fiji, and collaborating on humanitarian assistance and advanced technology sectors.
Economic and Social Cooperation
- Seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, including agreements on building a super-speciality hospital and on migration and mobility.
- India will establish Jan Aushadhi Kendras in Fiji to provide low-cost generic medicines.
- Support for Fiji’s overseas medical referral program through the ‘Heal in India’ initiative.
Regional Security Concerns
Prime Minister expressed concerns over China's plans for a naval base in the Pacific and emphasized the need for a secure Indo-Pacific region, aligning with India's stance.
Historical and Cultural Ties
Prime Minister acknowledged the role of Indian indentured laborers in Fiji, highlighting their contribution to Fiji's cultural diversity and unity.
Commitment Against Terrorism
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and condemned the April 20 terror attack in Pahalgam.
