Historical Significance
- The MiG-21 was first inducted into the IAF in 1963, making it India's first supersonic fighter jet.
Operational Achievements
- The MiG-21 played critical roles in the 1965 and 1971 wars, the 1999 Kargil conflict, and the 2019 Balakot air strikes.
Future Prospects
- With the phasing out of MiG-21 squadrons, the IAF's combat strength will reduce to 29 squadrons.
- The Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk 1A is anticipated to replace the ageing MiG-21 in the future.
