Inauguration of TASL Facility in Morocco

The Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh, and his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelatif Loudyi, inaugurated the Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s (TASL) defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, Morocco on September 23, 2025.

  • This is the first overseas plant established by an Indian firm.
  • The facility covers an area of 20,000 square meters.
  • It will produce the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8x8, which is indigenously developed.
  • The WhAP is a collaborative design by TASL and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India.

Significance of the Facility

The Ministry of Defence hailed it as a "historic moment" for India-Morocco relations, marking a new chapter in their strategic partnership.

  • Initial deliveries of WhAP to the Royal Moroccan Army will start next month.
  • Production commenced three months ahead of schedule.
  • It is the largest defence manufacturing facility in Morocco.

Strategic Importance

Rajnath Singh emphasized that the plant is an example of India's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, extending beyond self-reliance to "Make with Friends" and "Make for the World."

  • The project is expected to create defence-related employment opportunities in Morocco.
  • Initially, one-third of components will be sourced locally, increasing to 50% over time.
