Crime Statistics in India for 2023

Crimes Against Scheduled Tribes (STs)

  • Increase in Crimes: Crimes against STs increased by 28.8% in 2023.
  • Overall Cases: A total of 12,960 cases were registered, up from 10,064 in 2022.
  • State-Specific Data:
    • Manipur reported the highest with 3,399 cases compared to just one case in 2022.
    • Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan followed with 2,858 and 2,453 cases respectively.
  • Types of Crimes:
    • Simple hurt: 2,757 cases (21.3%).
    • Riots: 1,707 cases (13.2%).
    • Rape: 1,189 cases (9.2%).

Crimes Against Scheduled Castes (SCs)

  • Marginal Increase: Increased by 0.4% with 57,789 cases in 2023.

Crimes Against Women

  • Overall Cases: 4,48,211 cases registered, a 0.7% increase from 2022.
  • Major Crime Categories:
    • Cruelty by husband/relatives: 1,33,676 cases (29.8%).
    • Kidnapping and abduction: 88,605 cases (19.8%).
    • Assault with intent to outrage modesty: 83,891 cases (18.71%).
    • POCSO Act: 66,232 cases (14.8%).

Crimes Against Children

  • Overall Cases: 1,77,335 cases in 2023, a 9.2% increase from 2022.
  • Major Crime Categories:
    • Kidnapping and abduction: 79,884 cases (45%).
    • POCSO Act: 67,694 cases (38.2%).

Crimes Involving Juveniles

  • Overall Cases: 31,365 cases registered, a 2.7% increase from 2022.
  • Juvenile Offenders: 40,036 juveniles apprehended; 79% were aged 16-18 years.

Metropolitan Cities Crime Data

  • Total Arrests: 7,33,983 people arrested across 19 metropolitan cities.
  • Chargesheeting and Conviction:
    • 4,90,297 persons chargesheeted.
    • 1,46,022 persons convicted.
    • Kochi, Kolkata, and Pune recorded the highest chargesheeting rates.
