Yellow-throated Marten in Kaziranga National Park
The yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula), a small predator known for its fierce temperament, has been documented for the first time in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Significance of the Sighting
- The marten was photographed during routine camera trapping by the Kaziranga Tiger Cell.
- This sighting confirms the presence of this mesopredator in the park’s semi-evergreen forest patches.
Characteristics of the Yellow-throated Marten
- It is a diurnal, tree-climbing mustelid.
- Contributes to seed dispersal, which aids in forest regeneration and maintaining ecosystem balance.
- Weighs up to 2 kg and is known for its hyper-aggressive nature, similar to the honey badger.
Distribution and Conservation Status
- Found across the Himalayan region and parts of the northeastern region including Assam.
- Protected under Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that Assam is achieving conservation success that extends beyond landscapes to support thriving ecosystems, as evidenced by this sighting.
