India's Formal Identification of Locations in Arunachal Pradesh

In response to China's attempts to rename locations in Arunachal Pradesh, India has taken a definitive step on August 7, 2026, by formally identifying 27 places with standard names on the official Indian map. This initiative aims to enhance the recognition and awareness of these locations among the public.

Key Locations Identified

  • Long Ju: Located along the Line of Actual Control, a significant flashpoint since 1959.
  • Maja: A village near Long Ju in Upper Subansiri district.
  • Bisa Village: Known for its strategic high-altitude mountain pass.
  • Thag La: Site of a key battle in 1962 between India and China.
  • Jairampur: A logistics hub in Changlang district.
  • Sambho Sarovar: A high-altitude lake.
  • Other notable places: Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Sher-e-Thapa Memorial, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, Kamlang Nagar, Buddhamandir.

Significance

This formal identification by the Indian government is a rebuttal to China's efforts in assigning "fictitious names" to these territories. India maintains that such attempts by China cannot change the "undeniable reality" of these regions being part of India and warns that they could disrupt the normalization of bilateral ties.
