Initial Fuel Loading at Rajasthan Atomic Power Project
The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has initiated the initial fuel loading (IFL) process at Unit 8 of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) located in Rawatbhata, Rajasthan. This development signifies a crucial advancement towards the commissioning of the 700-megawatt-electric (MWe) indigenous pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR).
Key Details
- Commercial Operation Timeline: The unit is expected to begin commercial operations within the current financial year, with the entire process from IFL to commercial operation typically spanning six to eight months.
- Commencement of IFL: The IFL began at 15:18 hrs on September 19, 2026. Key personnel present included Shri S. D. Paraswar, Director (Operations), Shri N. K. Mitharwal, Director (Projects), and Shri D. S. Rao, Site Director, among others.
- Regulatory Approval: The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) granted permission following stringent safety evaluations, system integrity audits, and site readiness reviews.
Next Stages in Commissioning
- First Approach to Criticality (FAC): This stage will initiate a controlled fission chain reaction.
- Power Generation Commencement: Following FAC, the unit will begin power generation.
Significance of the Development
- Standardization and Fleet Mode Deployment: Unit 8 is the fourth reactor in a series of 16 indigenous 700 MWe PHWRs, with earlier units commencing operations at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) and RAPP.
- Advancement of India's Nuclear Program: The project exemplifies the growth of India's indigenous nuclear power initiatives, emphasizing safe and sustainable power generation.
Future Projects
- Geotechnical Investigations: These have begun for Units 9 and 10 at the RAPP site, marking initial steps in foundational development.
- Ongoing Reactor Constructions: NPCIL has eight other reactors under construction across different locations, including Gorakhpur, Kaiga, and Kudankulam.
