  • The reforms were launched at the curtain raiser of the World Telecom Standardization Assembly to be hosted by India in October 2024.
    • International Telecommunications Union,  a specialized agency of the United Nations, conducts the WTSA once every four years.
       
  • Key reforms announced
    • Spectrum Regulatory Sandbox (SRS): simplifies research and development regulations to encourage spectrum band exploration and drive technological advancements.
      • Wireless Test Zones (WiTe Zonesfor facilitating outdoor testing in SRS. 
        • WiTe Zones are categorized into urban and remote areas for experimentation.
    • Abolition of  Wireless Operating License (required as per Indian Telegraph Act, 1885) to simplify licensing processes, save service providers' time and improve the ease of doing business.
    • MoU with Ericsson for the “Ericsson Educate” program to offer approved courses and improve students' digital skills in universities where 5G case labs have been established.
       
  • About Telecom sector
    • The telecom industry in India is the second largest in the world, with a subscriber base of 1.079 Bn.
    • Challenges: sustaining average revenue per user growth, maintaining consistent service quality, adapting to shifting consumer preferences, intense competition, etc.
