    Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards for 6th generation of diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago

    It was announced by the Indian Prime Minister and said that India will create a database of the Girmitiya community.

    • OCI card holders are allowed to travel to India without a visa, work and study in India, own property (except for certain agricultural and plantation properties), etc.
    • Indian-origin people make up more than 40% of the population of Trinidad and Tobago.
    • Girmitiyas were Indian indentured laborers who migrated to British colonies in the 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily to work on plantations.
