Industrial Corridors, key for strengthening India’s Industrial Ecosystem

Union Budget 2026-27 announcement towards developing an integrated East Coast Industrial Corridor with a well-connected node at Durgapur highlights a major push towards Industrial Corridors.

About Industrial Corridors

  • Meaning: They are linear development zones that connect major economic centres through an integrated network of roads, railways, ports, and airports.
    • They house globally comparable infrastructure; facilitate economic agglomeration; use regional strengths through focussed investments, etc.
  • National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICDP): Under this various projects across 11 corridors are being implemented, through a sustainability-focused framework supporting Low-Carbon Cities (LCCs).
    • National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) previously Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC), was incorporated in January 2008; as an autonomous body under Ministry of Commerce & Industry  for implementing NICDP.
    • National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT):Received ₹3,000 crore under Budget Estimates 2026-27.

Key Challenges associated with Industrial Corridors

  • Land Acquisition issues: E.g. Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) requires huge areas for greenfield development, which could be easily provided by bigger states while smaller ones suffer.
  • Lack of Coordination between Departments: E.g., In Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC), industrial estate near Tumakuru is governed by Tumakuru Industrial Township Limited operating independently of local bodies and other agencies, etc.
  • Others: lack of state support; lack of training among staff; Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAoverlooking views of locals, etc.
