India's Rafale-Marine Acquisition
India has engaged in its largest-ever fighter jet acquisition by signing an inter-governmental agreement (IGA) with France for the purchase of 26 Rafale-Marine combat aircraft for approximately ₹64,000 crore. This move aims to enhance the firepower of the Indian Navy.
Overview of the Acquisition
- The agreement includes 22 single-seater jets and 4 twin-seat trainers.
- Deliveries are scheduled to start by mid-2028 and conclude by the end of 2030.
- Training for the crew will take place in both France and India.
Strategic Importance
The induction of Rafale-Marine is expected to significantly boost India's naval air power, acting as a force multiplier for the Navy's aircraft carriers.
- The jets will be deployed on INS Vikrant, India's first indigenous aircraft carrier.
- The agreement includes provisions for technology transfer to integrate indigenous weapons onto the jets in India.
Manufacturing and Economic Impact
- A production facility for the jets' fuselage and maintenance facilities for aircraft engines, sensors, and weapons will be established in India.
- The deal is projected to create thousands of jobs and revenue, benefiting numerous micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Integration with Existing Fleet
The Rafale-Marine will complement the Navy's current fleet of MiG-29K jets, which have faced serviceability issues. The commonality with the Indian Air Force's existing fleet of 36 Rafale jets will enhance joint operational capability and optimize training and logistics.
