Northeastern Region District SDG Index 2023-24
The NITI Aayog has released a report indicating an improvement in the share of districts in the eight Northeastern states under the ‘front runner’ category for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The percentage increased from 62% in 2021-22 to 85% in 2023-24.
Key Findings
- The categorization of a district as a ‘front runner’ requires a score between 65 and 99 on the SDG index.
- A district with a score between 50 and 64.9 is categorized as a ‘performer’.
- Hnahthial district in Mizoram topped the region with a score of 81.4, followed by Champhal district in the same state with a score of 79.8.
- Despite improvements, the share of ‘front runner’ districts for SDG-7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG-10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG-12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) decreased in 2023-24 compared to 2021-22.
Notable Achievements
- All districts in Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura are categorized as ‘front runners’.
- The index is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (MDoNER) and NITI Aayog, with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- This edition covers 121 out of 131 districts, up from 103 out of 120 covered in the first edition released in August 2021.
