India's Renewable Energy Sector Growth
India's renewable energy sector demonstrated a significant year-on-year growth in capacity addition, reaching 420% in June 2025. The capacity increased from 1.4 GW in the previous year to 7.3 GW, as noted by the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy during the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit in Mumbai.
Solar Energy Advancements
- There has been an unprecedented rise in solar energy capacity, which grew by 4,000%, from 2.82 GW to 117 GW by 2025.
- Solar tariffs have significantly decreased by 80%, dropping from ₹10.95/unit in 2010–11 to ₹2.15/unit currently.
- Solar energy with battery storage has now become more cost-effective than thermal energy.
Wind Energy Growth
- Wind energy capacity increased by 140%, rising from 21 GW to 51.7 GW in the same period.
Investment and Economic Impact
- In 2024, a remarkable 83% of power sector investments were allocated to renewables.
- India attracted $2.4 billion in global energy development finance for clean energy in a single year.
- Since 2020, foreign direct investment in the sector has exceeded ₹1.6 lakh crore, including ₹42,000 crore in 2023 alone.
- In the first quarter of 2025, clean energy investment surged 7.7 times year-on-year, reaching $9.8 billion.
Waste-to-Energy Initiatives
- India's largest waste-to-energy plant in Ahmedabad processes 1,000 tonnes of solid waste daily into electricity.
- These initiatives underscore how India's energy transition is not only sustainable but also inclusive, offering benefits to cities, farmers, and communities.
