A new method developed by researchers which uses earthquake-detecting seismometers to track falling space debris with the help of sonic boom.

About Sonic boom

  • A sonic boom is the noise created by an aircraft or some other object when it surpasses the speed of sound.
  • This rapid movement creates shock waves that manifest as a loud, booming noise.
  • Causes:
    • Mostly associated with aircraft
    • Natural phenomena:volcanic eruptions, meteor showers & earthquakes

The Standard Model of Cosmology holds up in a massive 6-year study of the universe.

Standard Model of cosmology

Space debris

Space debris refers to man-made objects in orbit around the Earth that are no longer functional. This includes defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from collisions or explosions. Falling space debris can pose a risk to ground infrastructure and generate sonic booms upon atmospheric re-entry.

Seismometers

Seismometers are scientific instruments used to detect and measure seismic waves, which are vibrations that travel through the Earth. They are primarily used to record earthquakes but can also detect other vibrations, including those caused by sonic booms from falling space debris.

Sonic boom

A sonic boom is the sound phenomenon caused by an object, such as an aircraft or space debris, traveling through the air at a speed faster than the speed of sound. This rapid movement generates shock waves that propagate outwards, resulting in a loud, explosive noise.
