Details of National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules, 2026

  • Composition: Chairperson and two Members appointed by the Central Government based on recommendations of a Search-cum-Selection Committee.
  • Term of Office: 3 years or until attaining 65 years of age, whichever is earlier. 
    • Eligible for reappointment for one additional term.
  • Powers and Functions of the Board
    • Maintaining records of the National Sports Election Panel and National Sports Bodies. 
    • Frame model guidelines for sports governance and committee functioning in National Sports Bodies. 
  • Audit:CAG is empowered to audit the accounts of the Board.

Details of National Sports Governance (National Sports Tribunal) Rules, 2026 

  • Term of Office
    • Chairperson: 5 years or until the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.
    • Members: 5 years or until the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier.
    • Eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.
  • Techno-legal measures for digital implementation through a dedicated portal.

About National Sports Tribunal (NST)

Under the Act, NST is established for the independent, speedy, effective and cost-efficient disposal of sports-related disputes.

  • Composition: Chairperson and two other members appointed by the Central Government.
  • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Chairperson: Current/former Supreme Court Judge or a former Chief Justice of a High Court.
    • Members: Eminent persons with expertise in sports, public administration and law.
  • Jurisdictional Exclusions: Cannot hear disputes related to major sporting events (Olympics,Asian Games etc.), doping, or matters under the exclusive jurisdiction of sports bodies, international federations etc.
  • Powers and Functions
    • It possesses powers vested in a civil court under the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.
    • Appeals against Tribunal orders lie with the Supreme Court within 30 days.
