Applications of Technology in Water Management and Conservation

  • AI-driven Analysis: It processes GIS and satellite data to identify optimal locations for farm ponds, recharge wells, and check dams for rainwater harvesting and water budgeting.
  • Drones: used for surveying and the creation of high-resolution maps. It can also perform automated inspections to capture early indications of leaks or deterioration in rainwater storage systems.
  • IoT Sensors and Smart Sensors: These devices enable real-time monitoring of water quality, consumption patterns thereby reducing wastage.
  • Micro-irrigation Systems: Technologies like drip and sprinkler irrigation improve farm water-use efficiency and are key to precision agriculture.
  • Advanced Water Treatment Technologies: UV and membrane technologies (e.g., reverse osmosis, Membrane BioReactors) are essential for recycling and reuse.
  • Blockchain Technology: It offers a secure, transparent, and efficient way to track water usage, distribution, and quality through an immutable ledger integrated with IoT sensors.

India’s Tech Integration for Groundwater management

  • Geographic Information System (GIS):  helps in  monitoring of minor irrigation projects.
  • Real Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS): installed for monitoring surface and ground water levels under National Hydrology Project.
  • India-Groundwater Resource Estimation System (IN-GRES) developed by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB)
  • Satellite data from platforms like GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) are leveraged for large-scale groundwater storage assessment.
