AWD contributes to enhanced water productivity while maintaining high yields and methane emission reductions in rice production as per study.

AWD in paddy

  • What? It is a water management technique, practiced to cultivate irrigated lowland rice with much less water.
  • Mechanism: The paddy fields, instead of being constantly flooded, are periodically dried out before re-flooding.

How does AWD reduce GHG emissions?

  • Methane in wet or “paddy” rice soil is produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic material after the flooding of rice fields.
  • Allowing the field to drain removes the waterlogged anaerobic condition for a time and halts the production of methane.
