  • Focus Area: Company-level joint training for counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.

Recently, there has been a spate of small earthquakes in Maharashtra

  • Seismologists call this pattern of quakes an earthquake swarm.

Earthquake Swarms

  • About: It occurs when multiple seismic events of comparable intensity strike a small area in relatively quick succession.
    • It involves a series of many (sometimes thousands) low-intensity shallow (<10 km depth) earthquakes without a discernible main shock that can occur over weeks in active geothermal areas.
  • Hydro-Seismic Cause: Monsoon rainfall seeps into Deccan basalt fractures, building pore-fluid pressure that weakens fault resistance and triggers repeated, low-intensity energy.  

The Supreme Court took serious note of the pendency of cases in the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission and asked the Centre to consider setting up regional and circuit benches to clear the backlog.

About National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC):

  • It is a quasi-judicial commission originally set up in 1988 under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, it currently operates under the modernized Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
  • Objective: To provide inexpensive, speedy, and summary redressal of consumer disputes. 
  • It is headed by a sitting or a retired Judge of the Supreme Court of India or a sitting or a retired Chief Justice of the High Court.
  • It shall have jurisdiction to entertain a complaint valued more than two crore and also have appellate and revisional jurisdiction from the orders of State Commissions.

Russia is exploring the possibility of developing a rail link providing access to India and the Indian Ocean.

  • Russia aims to bypass vulnerable maritime chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz and the Bosphorus, complementing existing frameworks like the INSTC corridor. 

International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC)

  • Established: in 2000 in St. Petersburg, by Iran, Russia and India to enhance trade and transport connectivity among countries along its route.
  • About: It is a 7,200-km Multi-modal transportation route linking Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf to Caspian Sea via Iran and onward to northern Europe via St. Petersburg in Russia.
  • Members: 13 (India, Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, Belarus, Oman and Syria).
  • Significance: 
    • Time & Cost Efficiency: Reduces transit time by roughly 30% to 40% (vs. the conventional Suez Canal route) and freight costs by nearly 30%.
    • Access to Central Asia: Offers India a reliable overland transit gateway to landlocked, resource-rich Central Asian republics, bypassing Pakistan.

About Banni Grasslands:

  • It is located along the northern border of Kachchh district in the state of Gujarat.
  • The Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary and Chhari Dhand Conservation Reserve are part of the Banni Grasslands.
  • It is also home to 22 ethnic groups, such as the Maldharis, the Rabaris, the Jats, the Mutwas, and the Meghwals.

About Blackbuck:

  • It is a medium-sized fast, diurnal antelope native to India and Nepal.
  • Habitat: The blackbuck mostly lives in open grasslands, dry scrub areas, and thinly forested areas.
  • Distribution: It is widespread in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and other areas throughout peninsular India.
  • State animal: of Punjab, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Conservations Status:
    • IUCN Red List: Least Concerned.
    • Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (India): Schedule I.

Madras High Court has declared Tamirabharani river a deity, thereby granting it legal personhood.

  • The court made it clear that no person will have a right to pollute the river, even in the name of religion.
  • The court however permitted immersion of ashes in the river.

About Tamirabharani (Porunai) river

  • Origin: Agastyarkoodam peak of Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats, above Papanasam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
    • It flows through Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts of the Tamil Nadu state into the Gulf of Mannar.
  • It is the only perennial river in Tamil Nadu, fed by both the Southwest and Northeast monsoons.
  • It flows towards the north direction initially. However, later changes to the east direction.
  • Major tributaries: Peyar, Ullar, Pambar, Servalar, Manimuthar, Gadananathi ,Pachaiyar, Chithar.
