- In 1888, the role of women in the Indian army began in "Indian Military Nursing Service"
- Army Act, 1950 prohibited the recruitment of females into the army.

- In 2020, the Supreme Court passed landmark judgment (The Secretary, Ministry of Defence V. Babita Puniya & Ors.) to grant PC to women.
